2010 Summer Leadership Academy :
Personalized Learning for the 21st Century

This year the BCSSA will continue our discussion on engaging students in the 21st Century with contributions from the Ministry of Education. The first day will be an opportunity to explore trends in 21st Century Learning with James Gorman, Deputy Minister of Education; followed by an interactive session with Rod Allen, Superintendent of Student Achievement. Day one will give members the chance to explore possible new directions for education in BC.

The second day will include sessions led by BCSSA members Bruce Beairsto, Pat Dooley, and Jeff Hopkins. These sessions will focus on next generation practice.

A detailed schedule will be available soon and sent to all members via Leader. Registration and hotel information can be found on the BCSSA website.

Retirement and Awards Dinner - August 19, 2010

Retirement imageThe Retirement and Awards Dinner is always a highlight of the year for the BCSSA. It is when we honour those who are ending their amazing careers, and this summer we have a banner year with 24 retirees!  The Distinguished Service Award(s) and the Award(s) of Recognition will also be presented that evening, with the recipients being announced on Leader in mid-June.  We are pleased that Deputy Minister James Gorman will again join us for the celebration of public education. We hope that everyone, new members and members not so new, will join us on the sunny terrace of the Delta Grand Okanagan for a very special evening.

The Great Canadian Relay

CBC and Lively Media are launching a national fitness initiative and they are looking for a middle school in BC to participate. This program will take grade seven & eight students from 12 schools across Canada and train them to run 10 kilometres. These students will run in the Great Canadian Relay - the first and only relay to cross Canada coast-to-coast on foot. The chosen school will be assigned local trainers, registered dietitians, and a famous Canadian athlete, who will mentor, inspire and champion the students. Each of the 12 middle schools chosen will also be awarded $25,000 worth of fitness equipment. Details on how to partcipate are attached here.
