Fall Conference 2009
President's Message Hello everyone. As we are fresh from our AGM I want to start by thanking you for your support of the BCSSA staff and executive over the past year, and for your supporting the same executive team being in place for another year. We look forward to serving you. This is a very important time for the BCSSA, particularly given the AGM motion from last week in regard to influence and profile and a paid presidency. Please read the following and feel free to contact me directly at kelder@sd63.bc.ca if you have questions or concerns. Paid Presidency At the very well attended AGM of last week members present voted 77-2 to put the question of a paid presidency to all members of BCSSA via an electronic vote. We are now asking all members to review the "influence and profile" materials provided over the past year, and discussed extensively in chapter meetings, to ensure that each of us is up to speed on the rationale for this proposal. Please go to the members only section to view the pertinent documents. To be clear, the proposal is to have a half-time paid president in place of our current volunteer position. In short, the rationale is to provide the BCSSA with the ability to effectively influence provincial policy, and to have a more constant profile that instills confidence in public education. The outcomes of our province-wide discussions have made it clear that a half-time paid presidency is the best means to this end, and we look forward to testing that hypothesis with a province-wide vote in the new year. If approved, the change would take effect with the AGM elections of November 2010. |

Fall Conference a Hit Congratulations to Charlie Etchell and the professional development committee, as well as to Wendy Lee, Kim Young and our staff. The Fall Conference was a huge hit, with over 300 participants enthusiastically engaged in a discussion about . . . student engagement! Valerie Hannon was brilliant in her overview of education in the 21st century, and Andy Hargreaves and Alma Harris brought us brand new insights into leadership and learning. Eden and Carla Robinson provided a perfect close to the conference with their profound commentary on aboriginal learners and schooling. December 5th – Chairs, Superintendents and STs We are looking forward to what promises to be a fruitful discussion among board chairs, secretary-treasurers and superintendents on Saturday, December 5 at the Westin Bayshore. We have carved out part of that morning, from 7:30 to 10:00 am, during the BCSTA Academy. I look forward to co-hosting along with BCSTA President Connie Denesiuk and BCASBO President David Green. We will be joined by the Deputy Minister and senior Ministry staff for a dialogue focused on fiscal challenges and planning for 2010/11. Thank You, |
