Elliptical Galaxy
An elliptical galaxy is classified as having little or
no angular momentum, little or no interstellar matter, no young stars, and very
little open star clusters. The yellow-red color at the center of the previous
image indicates that the stars are old, (Population II), and have systems of
globular clusters. The stars were simply attracted to each other by
gravity and stayed there, in a shape that has become known an elliptical
galaxy.
The size of these space "footballs" vary from
eight thousand light years across, to over two million light years in diameter
with over a trillion stars. These galaxies are the most diverse in size, as
well as in shape. The diversity of the noted shapes is from (almost) perfect
circles to extremely elongated ovals. Below is an image of M32.
