Named by the NGS as one of the Explorers for the Millennium, he received his PhD in ethnobotany from Harvard University and his work as an anthropologist and botanical explorer has taken him from the forests of the Amazon to the mountains of Tibet, from the high Arctic to the deserts of Africa.

Recipient of the $125,000 Lannan Foundation literary prize, he is the author of thirteen best selling books including The Serpent and the Rainbow, a chronicle of his research on zombies among the secret societies of Haiti, which was later released as a feature film, and One River which was nominated fore the Governor General’s literary Award for Nonfiction.

Described by ABC 20/20 as a real-life Indiana Jones, Davis’ expeditions and investigations have been the subject of some 600 media reports and accounts, including three episodes of the X-files. A professional speaker for nearly 20 years, Wade has captivated audiences with tales of insight and adventure at more than 170 universities and museums throughout the world, and scores of corporate events here at home in Canada and the US.

He is currently working on a new series of films for the US and International Geographic Channel, which will be filmed in Columbia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Mongolia and India. BRUCE BEAIRSTO – is the Superintendent of Schools in Richmond, BC, where he has served in a range of capacities since 1974. Bruce began his career as a secondary physics and mathematics teacher seeking academic rigour and excellence for his students, but has experienced profound personal and organizational change over the course of his career, so that his primary focus now is on an inclusive culture of curiosity and collaboration that is committed to enabling all learners.

Doctoral studies were a catalyst for his development, but the fundamental cause was the rich experience and caring professional community that has surrounded him for the past 34 years, and which it is now his proud duty to help sustain and strengthen for others.

The title of Bruce’s presentation "Enabling Global Citizens: the system change that is required,” addresses how today's students face a future that is unknown except that it will clearly be very different from the past. Schools and school systems must change now to ensure student and societal success in a world that is changing rapidly due to environmental stress, global economics and social diversity.  Fortunately, British Columbia is blessed with unique opportunities, if we are bold enough to seize them.
