BCSSA 2009 Retirement and Awards Dinner

2009 Award of Recognition

The BCSSA Award of Recognition is presented to individuals and organizations for their contributions made to enhance public school education in British Columbia. The contribution may be of a local nature (i.e., to a specific district or districts) or of a general nature which has had a province-wide impact. The award recipient may be an individual, service club, corporation or non-profit organization.

The Award of Recognition was presented on April 16, 2009 to:

Dale Saip, Vice-President, The Vancouver Giants Hocky Team, "Read to Succeed program"

Dale Saip accepts the award on behalf of The Vancouver Giants. Since its inception six years ago, Read to Succeed has grown into a very successful program, last year involving over 98 schools and 10,000 students alone. "Read to Succeed is an excellent opportunity to engage children in physical activity while having fun reading," Dale explained. The program is aimed at grades four through six and encourages students with their reading and studying skills as they begin their intermediate school years. Hockey players from the Vancouver Giants, who are students themselves, visit schools and speak about the importance of education and present a reading challenge to the students.
